1989-1994: Sterilex founders funded by US Army to develop a universal decontamination technology for biological and chemical warfare agents. Research team developed a unique technology (PerQuat®) designed to remove biofilms and kill resistant microorganisms in biofilm.
1991: First publication of studies conducted by the National Food Processing Association showing that the PerQuat® chemistry was effective in killing Listeria in biofilm, and more effective than other routine sanitizers.
1995: Sterilex Corporation incorporated in the state of Maryland with the mission of developing specialty antimicrobial products for markets where biofilm control is an important factor.
1999: Sterilex receives first group of EPA registrations for its powdered and liquid products.
2000: Sterilex products mandated for use by one of largest global meat and poultry processing companies.
2001: Sterilex receives Maryland Industrial Partnerships Award to establish efficacy of PerQuat® in removing biofilm in dental unit waterlines.
2005: Sterilex becomes the first company to receive EPA registration with biofilm claims for public health and industrial use sites.
2008: Sterilex receives USDA National Research Initiative grant titled “Improved Methods to Control Biofilms Containing Listeria monocytogenes in Meat and Poultry Processing Environments.”
2012: Sterilex establishes full distribution throughout North America for portfolio of products for Food and Beverage plant disinfection.
2015: Sterilex granted trademark and regulatory approvals in Canada.
Sterilex is a third-generation, family-owned company that began when one of the inventors of the company’s core technology launched a scientific research company following his retirement as a chemist. This small R&D company won a military contract to develop a universal decontaminating technology for biological and chemical warfare agents. In the process, the technology team learned more about the microbiology of biofilms and their role in developing resistant microorganisms, so they focused on developing a core technology that could penetrate and dissolve biofilm and kill the bacteria living within it. Recognizing the broader commercial applications for these products in the areas of health care and animal and food processing environments, Sterilex was launched in 1995.
Since then, Sterilex has developed a line of proprietary biofilm-control biocides, broad spectrum disinfectants, and decontamination products that can be used in a variety of applications such as food and beverage protection, animal health, and water treatment applications.
Sterilex patented PerQuat® technology has the unique ability to penetrate and remove biofilms, kill microorganisms in biofilms (such as Listeria, E.coli, Salmonella, and Pseudomonas), and remove organic contaminants.
