Sterilex® Provides Chemical Pesticide Decontamination and Removal for Hurricane Relief Efforts

Sterilex® Corporation has developed and currently markets patented products for chemical and biological decontamination which are sold under the trade names Sterilex® UltraKleen and Sterilex® Ultra CB Decon.

Sterilex® products are currently being used in the Hurricane Katrina clean-up, and have been shown to be successful in decontaminating and removing chemical pesticides. Sterilex® Ultra-Kleen 102P has been effectively used in southern Louisiana for decontamination and removal of Carbofuran & Carbosulfan (two carbamates) and Cadusafos (an organophosphorus pesticide). Sterilex® Ultra-Kleen 102P has been shown to reduce the level of chemical pesticide residue to below detection within 15 minutes. Advantages over traditional methods of cleanup include superior decontamination efficacy, improved worker safety, significant cost-savings, and ease-of-use.

These products were initially developed under US military contracts to create improved universal decontaminating products for biological and chemical warfare agents. Sterilex® technology is effective against all toxic chemicals susceptible to hydrolytic attack, such as organophosphorus pesticides, anticholinesterase carbamates, nerve agents, arsenicals, and chlorine gas. Sterilex® products are antimicrobial, and are registered with the US EPA as antibiofilm agents, biocides, and disinfectants. Sterilex® chemistry has the unique ability to penetrate both aqueous and non-aqueous phases, and is therefore extremely effective in removing organic soils, and adherent biological and chemical contamination. Sterilex® products have been demonstrated to penetrate oils and paints and detoxify adsorbed pesticide contaminants.

Sterilex® is the only company to have been granted EPA-registered product claims for the removal of biofilm, killing of biofilm bacteria, and prevention of biofilm. Sterilex® products are available as liquids and powders and can be applied in a variety of ways including a foam, a spray, high-pressure wash, liquid soak, or powder. Sterilex® products contain no hazardous chemicals, volatile organic compounds, or strong oxidizing agents such as chlorine.

The US EPA has required the use of Sterilex® UltraKleen at SuperFund sites to decontaminate the interior and exterior of buildings which had been illegally treated with methyl parathion, an organophosphorus compound. The EPA demonstrated that the Sterilex® product was even effective in extracting and decontaminating methyl parathion that had been absorbed into paint.
