Cleaning Worn Equipment Belts in Food Processing Plant

AREA OF CONCERN: BELTS IN A PROCESSING FACILITY THAT BECAME WORN, AND AS A RESULT, DIFFICULT TO CLEAN.

ISSUE

Sterilex became involved with a plant that ran multiple pieces of equipment that relied on belts to transfer food products. The belts had become very worn, creating harborage points on the belt.

BACKGROUND

The plant was cleaning and sanitizing the belts, but after a certain point in the life of the belt, they were no longer able to get the belts clean. Generally, at this point, the plant would change the belt to a new one. The process of changing belts can be costly and time consuming, so the processor was looking for an alternative option for cleaning the aged belts.

RECOMMENDATION

Sterilex proposed the following actions:

  • Follow the detergent with a rinse step, and an application of Sterilex Ultra Disinfectant Cleaner Solution 1 and Sterilex Ultra Activator Solution followed by a water rinse.
  • Treat these surfaces 3-5 days in a row, then follow with a treatment every other day on the worn belts.

RESULTS

The plant was able to clean the belts well enough that it extended their usable life significantly, saving both time and money.
