Eliminating Listeria Positives in Produce Facility Drains

AREA OF CONCERN: PRESUMPTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL LISTERIA POSITIVES IN BOTH ROUND FLOOR DRAINS AND LARGE TRENCH DRAINS IN A PRODUCE FACILITY

ISSUE

Sterilex was contacted by a produce cutting and packaging facility that was experiencing Listeria positives in a number of drains.

BACKGROUND

Plant was hand scrubbing the drain surfaces and had tried a number of sanitizers in an effort to control the problem. Chlorine bleach and Quaternary Ammonium sanitizers were not successful in controlling the problem.

RECOMMENDATION

Sterilex proposed the following actions:

  • Replace the chlorine bleach with Sterilex Ultra Disinfectant Cleaner and Activator Solution.
  • Foam the large floor drains using a Sterilex custom drain attachment for the portable tank foamer, and foam the large trench drains with the stock hose nozzle.
  • Treat these surfaces 3-5 days in a row, then follow with treatment once per week.

RESULTS

  • Elimination of presumptive positives in drains.
