The Pests You Can’t See: Disease Prevention Through Biosecurity Practice

Paula Courtney is the Director of Animal Health at Sterilex, where she leads a team focused on providing sanitation and biosecurity solutions to poultry, swine and other livestock producers.  Paula’s interest in animal health and production began at a young age through her involvement raising and showing many species of livestock. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.S. in Dairy Science and has spent the past decade working within the animal health, pest control and veterinary industries.

Dr. Scott McKenzie is a Toxicologist and Technical Director of Live BioTherapeutics for Boehringer Ingelheim’s U.S. avian business division.  He has been working with the U.S Poultry sector for over 25 years, developing, evaluating and optimizing diverse pathogen management strategies and products, primarily for hatchery and field sanitation, poultry drinking water disinfection, gut bacteria management, and biosecurity.  He has worked with nearly every U.S. hatchery over the last 13 years to optimize cleaning and disinfecting performance, coupled with surface, water and air space sanitation.

Biosecurity through Vector Control in Poultry Barns

Dr. Danny McDonald is a Poultry and Livestock Entomologist for MWI Animal Health. He received his Ph.D. in entomology from Texas A&M University in 2012 and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and Master of Science in Agriculture from Tarleton State University. Dr. McDonald is a technical consultant/liaison between insecticide manufacturers and end users of those technologies which include poultry integrators, contract growers, custom applicators, and MWI outside sales staff. He is responsible for training customers and sales staff on how to control pests, pesticide application, and various technologies, as well as conducting laboratory and field experiments on pests of poultry and livestock. Dr. McDonald lives in Sante Fe with his wife of 6 years and 3 daughters.
