AREA OF CONCERN: AVIAN INFLUENZA TRANSFER FROM PALLETS MOVED BETWEEN FARM AND PROCESSING ENVIRONMENTS
Avian Influenza is easily transferred through foot traffic and is often harbored in difficult to clean areas of equipment and transport units. Sterilex was contacted to develop a program for an egg processor to control risk of Avian Influenza transfer on pallets moved between farm and processing environments.
The plant utilized a pallet exchange program for plastic pallets that were used to bring eggs to the plant. The pallets were sanitized at the plant, and sent back to the farms that supply the plant. The plant was looking for a disinfectant that is approved and validated for killing avian influenza, particularly on difficult to clean surfaces.
Sterilex proposed the following actions:
- Fully clean the pallets as stated in the plant’s standard sanitation procedures.
- After fully cleaning all organics off of the surface of the pallets, treat the pallets with Sterilex Ultra Disinfectant Cleaner and Activator Solution in order to achieve an effective sanitizing step.
- Repeat this procedure with all pallets before returning to any other facility.
- Following treatment, no evidence of living Avian Influenza was found on the pallet surfaces. A Sterilex sanitizing program was implemented as a best practice program for the plant and directly contributes to the safety of the egg supply chain.
